The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, said that the regional elections held on Sunday in his country constitute an example of leading and participatory democracy.
Chavez said that the Venezuelan people are now used to having their expression taken into account and to playing their participatory role. He called on the population to vote as it is the duty granted by the country’s constitution.
The Venezuelan President made his statements shortly after voting at the Manuel Palacio Fajardo Technical School, in Caracas, where he stressed that the electoral process has been met by the people with full jubilation.
“Everything has been positive from all perspectives. All institutions have fully participated as well as all the citizens. Just go and vote and let’s wait and see the results in peace,” Chavez said as cited by the Bolivarian news agency.
Hugo Chavez also called on the people to accept the results of the electoral process, and he asked the media not to hurry in giving the results. “Let’s wait for the National Electoral Council to publish the final results of this democratic event,” he said.
Whatever the results of the vote, Venezuela will continue to be a country with a high level of governability said Chavez and stressed that the automated system implemented during the elections gives no room for fraud.
The Venezuelan President also greeted international observers and guests, reporters, members of the National Bolivarian Armed Forces and he recalled that although voting is not compulsory, it is an ethical duty of every citizen.
Nearly 17 million Venezuelans are expected to elect regional and municipal authorities throughout the South American nation, including 22 governors, 326 mayors, a metropolitan district mayor, 233 state council legislators, 13 metropolitan councilors, plus seven councilors for the Alto Apure district.
