In the United States there are a growing number of people that go hungry.
In the technical language of economists the revealing index of this certainty is the reduction of consumption which fell by one percent in October, the largest reduction since the US recession in 2001, which was hidden by the publicity bombardment following the attack on the Twin Towers.
If the United States has a Gross Domestic Product of some 10 billion dollars and if this internal consumption figure constitutes 75 percent (7.5 billion), then one percent is about some 75 billion dollars, a considerable sum.
Amidst of the recession of an economy that is decreasing instead of growing, it is logical that this would happen, unemployment increases considerably, while others prefer to save as a means of prevention facing an uncertain future.
A figure supplied by the Ministry of Commerce gives an example of this: the demand for durable goods fell 6.2 percent.
Of course, the distribution is not equal amidst the crisis. There are thousands of Americans that are deprived of nothing and millions who lack the essentials.
A report from the Coalition against Hunger revealed that the number of people in New York with insufficient food grew by 28 percent during last year.
The amount of people looking for free food has increased scandalously.
The most serious problem is that while the Bush government destines 700 billion dollars to solve the problems of the banks that have enormous capital, which sparked the speculative excess that unleashed the crisis, it has reduced the funds for institutions in the social sector.
This is the basic indicator to understand the sense of the “bailout” applied by Bush to the US economy. It does not revert to people with lower incomes, which demonstrates the fact that 68.8 percent of the consulted centers, which offer food for the poor (once a day), have reported that they do not have enough food to go around.
The meaning of this report is simple, according to 87 percent of the organizations surveyed: the number of people that go to these food centers for the poor and homeless has considerably increased in recent months.
If we take into account that the recession has just got started, and each day there are new reports of bankrupt banks, closure of factories and thousands of people in the unemployment lines, we can only come to the conclusion that this calamity will continue to grow.
Joel Berg, Executive Director of the Coalition against Hunger, believes: “the bad news is that we have more agencies than ever which have run out of food. The situation of the people that go hungry, truly horrible in 2007, has reached crisis proportions this year”.
