Medical Brigade Treats Hurricane Victims

A multiple disciplinary medical brigade is providing health care services in the communities most affected by the latest hurricanes. This is a new experience in westernmost Pinar del Rio province.
The brigade is made up of 13 specialists, including orthopedics, gynecologists, surgeons, psychiatrists, psychologists and dentists, the last one with portable chairs in order to perform extractions or fillings, depending on the patient’s needs.
This initiative, besides avoiding the moving of patients and their relatives to the province’s main city or to Havana City health centers reinforces the human factor in Cuba’s health system, and it brings the doctors and people closer.
This medical brigade has given over 1,600 consultations in a number of municipalities.
Several investments stand out, among them the opening of a minimum access surgical facility and the recent installation of a state-of-the- art echocardiogram scan, to improve cardiovascular diagnosis, as well as
allowing doctors to run the test in-situ.
