The aid mission led by Cuban doctors has already helped some 3 million people in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia.
A total of 135,667 eye operations have been performed in Guatemala thanks to the Cuban-Venezuelan aid mission for the blind called Miracle Mission (Mision Milagro in Spanish), Prensa Latina reported on Friday.
Miracle Mission is a social program that treats and operates on persons with blindness or correctable visual deficiency who have scant economic resources, and offering the services free of charge.
The data provided by Prensa Latina, measures operations in Guatemala from February 2008 to November 2014.
The figures also show that the number of beneficiaries in the country increased by 1,200 in the first 11 months of this year.
Numbers are expected to increase since Guatemala recently opened their forth Miracle Mission clinic in Mixco in the department of Guatemala. The three others are in Escuintla, Jalapa and Villa Nueva all in the same department.
Since the program’s inception 10 years ago, more than 3 million beneficiaries have regained their sight in all Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and Africa
This year marks Miracle Mission’s 10-year-anniversary, since it was created by former Cuban President, Fidel Castro, and former Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez.
It has since been further developed by the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA).
