Cuba garnered its second gold medal at the Beijing 2008 Paralympics with judoka Isao Cruz defeating French Cyril Jonard in the final of the 81 Kg division.
Cruz (26) secured the title with a victory for technical superiority on a koka over Jonard, Athens 2004 Paralympic winner and world champion of Brommart, France, 2006, a tournament for blind and visually impaired.
“In 2006, I discussed the gold medal with him (French Jonard) and I lost it. O the next day I defeated him on the teams tournament,” recalled Cruz, who had won the Sydney 2000 Paralympic gold.
Cuban discus thrower Leonardo Diaz gave the country the first gold medal of these Games. Wheelchair athlete Diaz won the medal with his second throw, recording a mark of 40.87 meters at the Bird’s Nest Stadium.
