Cuban Higher Education Minister Miguel Diaz-Canel demanded freedom for the five antiterrorist fighters unjustly imprisoned in the United States since 1998, in remarks at the 12th Pedagogy Congress.
Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez are currently serving harsh sentences ranging from 15 years to double life terms.
Their real crime was gathering information about terrorist activities carried out by anti-Cuban organizations in Miami, Florida, to prevent the deaths of Cuban and even U.S. citizens.
According to Granma newspaper, Diaz-Canel gave a special lecture on achievements and challengesin higher education over the last 52 years of the Cuban Revolution.
The objective has been to restructure the university from the inside, and articulate its work with the country's development needs, the official said.
Diaz-Canel stated that the university is currently facing new challenges as part of its commitment to the deep-going economic changes now underway in Cuba.
