Politicians and academics called on France to open up to Cuba, to end the interference of the European Union's common position, and to establish fluid and respectful ties of cooperation with the island.
Addressing French Minister of Foreign Affairs Bernard Kouchner, parliamentary deputy Jean Jacques Candelier urged the government to coordinate with Spanish diplomacy to normalize EU links with Cuba.
French writer and journalist Danielle Beiltrach expressed herself similarly in two published articles, and returned to the issue of the five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unfairly imprisoned in US jails.
Beiltrach stated that while media campaigns usually try to distort Cuba's image, these men have been denied their most elemental rights during their trials and imprisonment over the last 12 years.
She also referred to dilatory maneuvers or the total impediment to their relatives to visit Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzalez, universally known as the Cuban Five.
Their real crime was protecting their country from terrorist actions planned by extremist groups in south Florida, she said.
