Raul Castro Awards Air Brigade that Protects Cuban Capital

Cuban President Raul Castro granted the Antonio Maceo Order to the Playa Giron (Bay of Pigs) Air Brigade, which is responsible for the custody of the western region, including the capital.
The Council of State, at a proposal of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, granted the Antonio Maceo Order to the institution for its significant contribution to training and combative readiness, and the historic missions it has carried out, Granma newspaper reported on Saturday.
During the celebration of the 55th anniversary of the brigade, the president unveiled a cast-bronze replica at the main entrance of the Brigades General Staff, and pinned the Order on the combat flag in its main flight ramp.
He also toured the units simulator complexes, where he verified the advances of science and technology in function of preparing pilots and supporting staff, the newspaper states on its front page.
The Brigade played a key role in April 1961 in the defeat of the US-backed mercenary forces in Playa Giron.
