Cuban President Raul Castro acknowledged the preventive measures underway in eastern Holguin province in the face of Hurricane Ike, expected to hit this territory on Sunday.
The Cuban President talked on the phone with the First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party in Holguin, Miguel Diaz-Canel, and he sent the people of the province his message of confidence that they will be able to counter the effects of the natural phenomenon.
Raul Castro also asked the people and authorities in Havana to be well prepared to face Ike. During a meeting with political and government leaders, Pedro Saez Montejo, president of the Provincial Defense Council passed on the indications given by Raul Castro, who called on everyone to get ready for the worst situation.
Pedro Saez, along Vice- President Carlos Lage insisted in civil defense measures aimed at protecting human lives first, and then guaranteeing the protection of material resources; they said not a single minute can be wasted during the preparedness stage.
