Army General Raul Castro highlighted Cuba''s organization both to face a military aggression and a hurricane, Granma daily reported Saturday.
The president of the National Defense Council said that such organization inspires "more respect than any kind of weapon," as evidenced in the results of the Bastion 2009 strategic exercise, concluding today nationwide.
After getting acquainted with the Western Army's operative situation, the Cuban president visited a reconnaissance unit, where he praised the training of new generations of officers.
"They are well trained young officers, humble and discreet, sons of this people, born to play such a major role," he wrote in a visitors' book.
Raul insisted on the need to consolidate the country's institutionalization, maintain order and discipline, and have greater rationality in leadership structures.
These kinds of exercises were first held in 1980, to strengthen Cuba's defensive preparation to deter any possible attack, particularly by the US.
Bastion 2009 includes different kinds of tactic maneuvers, with movements of troops, war material, air drills, and explosions.
