A giant poster with a picture of the Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unjustly condemned in the United States will travel on an expedition to the North Pole in April 2014, the coordinator of the Committee for the release of the Cuban Five in Russia, Lena Loshkina, announced.
The Russian activist told Prensa Latina that, as part of the activities to be carried out in 2014 in favor of the freedom of Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, and Ramon Labañino, a "banner" of those anti-terrorist fighters will be placed in the Arctic, by Vladimir Koshelev.
The Five, as they are known in solidarity campaigns worldwide, were arrested on September 12, 1998 in Miami, for monitoring groups that organized, financed, and executed terrorist actions against their homeland.
Rene Gonzalez, the fifth member of the group, returned to Cuba after completing 13 years in prison, a period of supervised release, and renouncing his U.S. citizenship, a requirement of the judge in charge of the case.
The initiative to take to the North Pole the demand of freedom for the Cuban antiterrorist fighters will not only be an action from the Russian National Committee, but also the entire international movement of solidarity with the Liberty Island, Loshkina said.
The coordinator said the poster was especially designed for the 9th International Colloquium for the Release of the Five and against terrorism, held in the eastern Cuban city of Holguin, on Nov. 13-17, attended by Russian delegation led by Loshkina.
The Russia-Cuba Friendship Society member also appreciated the hundreds of signings printed in the "banner" by solidarity activists, relatives of the Cuban antiterrorist fighters, Rene Gonzalez, and renowned figures from the international movement, from around the world.
