Salvadoran Vice President Salvador Sanchez said in this capital that Cuba was his inspiration and that of his compatriots, in the fight for a better society, and thanked the island for its historical solidarity with his country.

"Cuba was my inspiration in the 60s when I was a student teacher and listened to Fidel (Castro), Raul (Castro) and Che (Guevara) on the radio, Sanchez told Prensa Latina on the last day of his stay in this capital, where he carried out a three-day official visit.

The candidate of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front for the 2014 elections said that those ideals, forged as part of the Cuban revolutionary process, evolved into a great fraternity towards the process and the people of the Caribbean island.

Cuba has also shown solidarity throughout its history with the Salvadoran people up to the present day, supporting cooperation in many ongoing programs and in the most necessary moments, Sanchez said.

Sanchez, who was formerly known as the guerrilla commander Leonel Gonzalez, said Havana contributed to understanding which led to the signing of peace accords in El Salvador after 12 years of armed conflict. It helped to build bridges of solidarity and attended to 500 disabled servicemen.

Cuba shares with El Salvador scientific advances in education, health, in confronting climate change, and we have found that support in all aspects, Sanchez said.
