Sandinista Victory in Nicaraguan Elections Confirmed
The Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) won in 105 of all the 146 municipalities of Nicaragua, including the capital, Managua, where elections took place on November 9, according to an official report by the electoral power.

The Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) won in 105 of all the 146 municipalities of Nicaragua, including the capital, Managua, where elections took place on November 9, according to an official report by the electoral power.
The final results were released on Thursday evening by the president ofthe Supreme Electoral Council, Roberto Rivas, who noted that the strongest opposition force was the Constitutionalist Liberal Party, whichtriumphed in 37 municipalities.
The Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance will be ruling in 4 city halls beginningJanuary 2009, while the other three political parties went away empty handed.
Elections in all seven municipalities making up the North Atlantic Autonomous Region were postponed until January 2009 due to the damage caused by hurricane Felix in the area on September 2007.
The overwhelming Sandinista victory was welcomed with shouts of joy by thousands of FSLN supporters, who had been picketing in front of the Supreme Electoral Council's headquarters to demand the release of the results.
However, the final figures do not guarantee the end of the post-electoral crisis underway in Nicaragua. This crisis has resulted in street riots between Sandinistas and liberals; acts of vandalism have taken place causing several people wounded and considerable material losses.
