The French Ship Ile de Batz on Saturday begins laying an undersea optical fiber cable from Venezuela to Cuba, which would improve the island''s international connection with the world.
With that initiative, Cuba will no longer depend on the United States to interconnect with the world, and communication will be safe, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Friday during a meeting with the leadership of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela.
The U.S. economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba has prevented the island from getting the optical fiber cable.
"They are 1,600 kilometers (about 994 miles) of union, integration between our peoples," Chavez said last Saturday at the National Assembly.
The project is part of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), and in line with the Cuba-Venezuela agreement for the creation of the joint venture Telecomunicaciones Gran Caribe S.A. (TGC).
