The purchase of produce to the United States by Cuba have been declined in the last few years, due to the difficult conditions that northern nation's blockade has imposed to such imports.
Pedro Alvarez, president of Cuba's food importing company, ALIMPORT, stated that such purchases to the United States have decreased in the last three years, although according to expectations, they should increase, due to the benefit they represent for both parties.
The decrease of import volumes is due that the maintenance of the blockade and the worsening of obstacles to purchase them make imports unsafe, Alvares told Opciones weekly.
Alimport has embezzled imports produced from the United States, to other safer markets, without obstacles to be exported to Cuba, and in turn, give credits, an aspect to take into account in times in which the international economic crisis has influenced in the rise in food prices.
