Study of Disabilities in Nicaragua Continues
A Cuban and Nicaraguan medical brigade, A Voice for All, has concluded
its study of disabled people in the department of Chontales and will
continue on to neighboring Granada.

A Cuban and Nicaraguan medical brigade, "A Voice for All," has concluded its study of disabled people in the department of Chontales and will continue on to neighboring Granada.
Since last October, 64 Cuban specialists and 25 Nicaraguan doctors have been carrying out a psychosocial, pedagogical and clinical/genetic study of disabled Nicaraguans, which has been completed in the departments of Masaya, Matagalpa, Chinandega, Managua, Leon, Jinotega, Nueva Segovia, Esteli and now Chontales.
In Chontales, experts began on June 30 by visiting nine municipalities and 40 neighborhoods to survey 4,356 people. They found 1,086 with with mental disabilities and the rest with other conditions.
In house-to-house visits, more than 6,600 consultations were were provided, on request, to the families of disabled individuals.
Overall, since the start of the project in Nicaragua, 134,384 homes have been visited and 90,634 individuals studied. Of these, 23,916 had mental disabilities and 60,716 had motor, hearing, visual and other impairments.
To date, the brigade has identified 3,036 critical cases, half of which have been solved with the help of local authorities.
After the house visits, a team of four Cuban doctors specializing in clinical genetics examine each case where the disability could have genetic causes. To date, they have made 18,952 visits and taken 94 samples, sent to Cuban labs for analysis.
Also, when necessary, neurophysiological, psychological, physiatric, orthopedic, neuropediatric and psychiatric specialists have revisited the homes of disabled individuals.
