Thousands of Mexicans filled the emblematic colossus of the Paseo de la Reforma today to pay tribute to the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.
The event, organized by the Antorchista (Torch) Movement, a popular organization that seeks to eradicate poverty in Mexico, commemorated the Cuban statesman with a speech by their Secretary-General, Aquiles Cordova, who urged the audience 'to continue Fidel's teachings and example.'
He recalled that the libertarian struggle led by Fidel Castro gave Cuba 'genuine independence and self-determination.' Describing the blockade against Cuba as 'murder', he said that the policy contrasted with Cuba's, which sent 'trained doctors and other professionals to third world countries.'
He also reminded the audience that Fidel Castro had organized his revolution on Mexican soil, from where he had left 60 years ago along with 81 members of the Granma Yacht expedition to fight and finally defeat the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship.
Dozens of people who could not enter the auditorium, followed the proceedings via a giant screen.
A performance of Cuban songs and poems and music by the Symphony Orchestra of Chimalhuacan completed the event.
