The United Nations are focusing on Monday on the agreement reached by Iran, Brazil and Turkey to enrich abroad the uranium that the Iranian nuclear program, which has peaceful ends, needs.
The news of the understanding accomplished in Tehran between Presidents Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (Brazil) and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (Iran) and Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan (Turkey) marks the beginning of the week at the UN headquarters in New York.
The Iranian president attended the opening of this meeting and he defended his country's projects in matters of the peaceful use of nuclear energy at the UN plenary.
The United States, France, Great Britain and Germany have insisted for months, through the P5-plus-1group, which is made up of Russian and China also, on intensifying the punishments that have fallen on Iran's shoulders for years.
According to the agreement, Iran will send 1 200 kg (2645, 5 pounds) of slightly enriched uranium (3.5 percent) to Turkey and it will receive, in the space of a year, 120 kg (264, 5 pounds) of enriched uranium that will be used in a nuclear reactor for medical research.
According to Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim, the understanding should be enough to avoid the imposition of sanctions to Iran by the UN Security Council.
