UN General Assembly to Analyze Millennium Objectives

Ninety-five heads of state and governments, including Cuban officials, will meet later this week at the UN’s headquarters in New York to analyze the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
The meeting, summoned by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, hopes to obtain a firm commitment to the eight Millennium Development Goals that basically seek to reduce extreme poverty by half before 2015, reported PL.
The Cuban official delegation attending the summit is headed the country’s First Vice President Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, and includes Fernando Remirez de Estenoz, head of the Foreign Relations Department of the Communist Party’s Central Committee; Felipe Perez Roque, Minister for Foreign Relations, and other officials from that Ministry.
Machado Ventura will speak on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement to take place at the UN high-level meeting on Africa’s development needs. He will also participate in the round table on the fulfillment of the Millennium Goals.
The UN Secretary General warned last Friday that the world faces an emergency in regards to development and said that achieving the millennium goals is essential to obtaining peace.
Nearly 190 countries signed the 2000 United Nations Millennium Declaration in which eight goals with a 2015 deadline were adopted as the main priorities of the world community.
The summit on the MDG begins on Thursday September 25 with a joint session of the UN General Assembly to be followed by three round tables on extreme poverty, education and health, and sustainable development.
The working sessions will be presided over by different world leaders.
Other initiatives related to the MDGs will also be simultaneously taking place.
