Cuba has given a priority attention to the progress of science as an essential part of its development agenda, the Caribbean nation''s ambassador to UNESCO, Dulce Buergo, said.
As part of the celebrations for the World Science Day for Peace and Development, the diplomatic representative stressed that this policy allows the country to achieve significant achievements in this sphere, and share experiences and contributions with the scientific community in other countries.
Women's contribution to the national scientific development is very prominent in this effort, she said.
Buergo recalled the words by the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, who in January 1960 stated that 'the future of our country should necessarily be a future of men of science.'
UNESCO celebrated World Science Day with activities chaired by Getachew Engida, deputy director general of the organization.
One of the premises discussed was the need to bring science closer to the society in order to expand the possibilities of knowledge, as well as stimulate sources of innovation and creativity that allow a sustainable, inclusive development and social justice for everyone.
