Debates on a social security bill to be introduced in Cuba, have shown a wide support for the changes that are based on the imminent aging of the Cuban population.
More than three million workers have attended the debates and have supported the basic changes proposed by the Social Security Ministry to the present resolution, which includes extending the retirement age for men and women by five years.
Alfredo Machado, with the national secretariat of the Cuban Workers Confederation (CTC) said 91 percent of all workers affiliated to the organization have participated in the discussion meetings.
Debates have already concluded in eight of the fourteen provinces of the country, including Pinar del Río, City of Havana, Cienfuegos, Holguin and Santiago de Cuba, even though meetings had to be rescheduled due to the passage of Hurricane Gustav across western Cuba and Ike a few days later, which nearly swept the whole country.
The meetings are due to end at the beginning of November to give way to provincial assemblies by the deputies who will analyze the suggestions made by the workers during the debate process prior to the discussion by the National Assembly (Parliament).
