The director of the José Martí Eye Hospital of Uruguay, Sandra Medina, described as excellent the human and professional technical work of the Cuban medical brigade working in this country since 2007.

'It is an excellent work from all points of view, in productivity, which is more than demonstrated, and in its humanistic condition', said the doctor to Prensa Latina.

It was declared that in the last eight years more than 58,000 surgical operations were performed and last week organized a 'scientific conference of excellence' during the Day of Latin American Medicine, where the works were aimed at improving a health system.

Medina said that Cuban doctors, in addition to their work with high professionalism 'show us how we can improve the work even more, in finding solutions to the weaknesses'.

The Uruguayan doctor pondered the human values of these physicians 'in the doctor-patient relationship, which in the world, I think, is being lost'.

For Dr. Orestes Mariño, head of the Cuban medical brigade, the work this year was satisfactory with health indicators that 'speak for themselves' both in numerical order as in the introduction of advanced equipment with which we did not have before.

The young eye surgeon noted that these technologies have represented a new challenge for the medical team 'regarding their training to start operating the technique'.

In turn, he stressed, this allowed us to 'continue to raise the quality of care to the Uruguayan people with surgeries of more effectiveness, efficiency and faster recovery'.

Mariño also highlighted the fact of arriving this year to places never reached with the active investigation of eye diseases, because 'we have spread to the most remote areas of the country', which allows us to have over 200,000 to this day, he stressed .

He said that before the end of 2015 or early next year the brigade, composed of 22 doctors, will arrive to the 60,000 surgeries performed.

The José Martí Eye Hospital, as a reference to national attention to eye pathologies, takes care of all kinds of diseases but is basically responsible for the cataract, pterygium and refractive with laser-action surgeries, among others.

This institution was inaugurated on November 29, 2007 and was preceded by the 'Operation Miracle', which took place between 2005 and 2007, through an agreement between the Uruguayan and Cuban governments.
