More than 200 worldwide pacifists will meet in the eastern Cuban province of Guantanamo on Nov. 20 and 21, to hold the 4th International Seminar on Peace and Abolition of Foreign Military Bases.
One of the objectives of the meeting is to promote the exchange of experiences on the consequences of those military facilities, the president of the Cuban Movement for Peace and Sovereignty of Peoples, Silvio Platero, said.
Platero -quoted by Granma newspaper- noted that Guantanamo was the chosen province because the oldest military base the United States has outside its territory is located there.
This place is focus of permanent actions that infringe the sovereignty and national integrity, Platero stressed.
The illegally occupied territory ignores the Peace Zone declaration adopted by the member countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States in 2014 in Havana.
The U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo, Cuba, emerges as part of the Naval and Coal Stations Agreement signed in 1903, which was canceled by Cuba since 1960, but the United States refused to accept.
The solution to this conflict is one of the main Cuban requests since the triumph of the Revolution, and a key element in the ongoing process towards the normalization of relations between the two countries.
