On the eve of the 76 anniversary of a similar event that caused the death of 3,000 people in this southern Cuban town, another hurricane is lashing it.
Seventy-six years ago a category four hurricane caused a storm surge that flooded the town, killing 3,000 of its inhabitants on a Sunday.
This time Hurricane Paloma hit on the coastal town with gusts up to 240 km/h (150 mph), causing the sea to enter 1.5 kilometers (one mile), reported via satellite Ricardo Poll, head of the municipality’s Civil Defense.
Among the damages reported is the falling of the province’s communications tower, isolating the territory, but a satellite communication unit of the Revolutionary Army Forv¡ces (FAR) is on the way to help establish services back.
Over 13,000 people were evacuated in the afternoon from this town, as part of the measures taken by the Civil Defense council.
