Puerto Rican pro-independence leader Rafael Cancel Miranda signed a call of Cuban intellectuals condemning Washington’s growing hostility towards Cuba.
The document demands the lifting of the criminal and inhumane blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States, and requests aid for the island, which was devastated after the passage of hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
The document, entitled “With Cuba Today,” shows the plain and simple truth about the hypocrisy of the current US administration, and has already been signed by more than 5,200 intellectuals from 73 nations.
The Puerto Rican patriot, one of the five members of that country’s Nationalist Party that incarcerated for 25 years in the United States for fighting for his homeland’s independence, demanded the government of George W. Bush immediately lift the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba for almost half a century, the Prensa Latina news agency reports.
The appeal circulated by Cuban intellectuals notes the damage caused by hurricanes Gustav and Ike, mainly in the area of food production and other essential branches of the national economy.
Amid this tragic circumstance, highlights the text, a debate has been opened in the United States about restrictions imposed on Cubans living in that nation from visiting their relatives on the island and sending them aid.
The call highlights the request made to the US government by Cuba to at least allow purchases from US firms for materials for repairing houses and electric lines, and that US companies be authorized to offer commercial credits to the island to buy food.
As a response, the Bush administration offered a ridiculous sum of aid and reaffirmed its policy of economic and financial blockade, which in these difficult moments is adding to the severity of conditions in Cuba.
