The 31st Latin American New Movie Festival starts Thursday in Havana with over 400 films and the screening of Argentinean cinema "El secreto de sus ojos," by Juan Jose Campanella.

The 31st Latin American New Movie Festival starts Thursday in Havana with over 400 films and the screening of Argentinean cinema "El secreto de sus ojos," by Juan Jose Campanella.
The film, which broke box-office hit in his country, will open the cinema event at the Karl Marx Theater tonight. It also includes performances by Jesus "Chucho" Valdes and Omara Portuondo.
Known here by films like "El hijo de la novia," the Argentinean filmmaker hopes to win a Coral award in the category of fiction, in which another 19 moviemakers are competing.
About 104 works from 17 countries will be in competition this year, of them 20 full length figure films, 21 first works, 24 documentary features and equal number of animated films, 15 short films and 28 original screenplays.
Prestigious figures conform the jury in the different categories, among them Brazilian Lucia Murat, Venezuelan Luis Alberto Lamata, and Argentinean Juan Jose Jusid.
Filmmakers, actors, scriptwriters, and experts of the region and worldwide, among them Argentinean musician Leon Gieco and Fito Paez, German actress Hanna Schygulla, US producer Robert Kraft and his fellow countryman Gary Lucas, will attend the 10-day event.
The festival brings this year innovations like a presentation of fantastic and horror films, a season with Belgian movies, and another dedicated to the Puerto Rican filmography, including documentary "Sin mapa," about the popular alternative duet Calle 13.
