The People''s Liberation Front (JVP) of Sri Lanka joined the international campaign for the immediate release of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in the United States for almost 14 years.
In the Red Power bi-monthly magazine, the Central Committee of the organization issued a resolution of condemnation to the inhuman and unjust treatment given by U.S. authorities to Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez.
JVP has especially repudiated the most recent violation on the rights of Gerardo, who was not allowed to receive visits from Cuban consul officials and was obstructed to meet with his defense lawyer.
The document stated that similar abuses show the double standard of the U.S. government regarding democracy and human rights, while questions the enforcement of those values in other countries.
The publication also reproduced a declaration from the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs that denounced the reiterated violations of the rights of the Cuban Five, as they are universally known, this time with Gerardo.
Monitoring activities by groups responsible for countless terrorist actions against Cuba made that in 2011, a Florida court imposed the Cuban Five penalties ranging from double life term to 13 years in prison.
Rene Gonzalez was released in October 2011 after completing his prison term. He was forced to remain in U.S. territory for three more years under supervised release, implying a risk for his life given to the prevailing anti-Cuban atmosphere in that southern U.S. city.
