Eusebio Leal's Visit to Peru Closes in Solidarity with Cuban 5

The demand for the release of five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in the United States was the highlight at the close of the visit to this country of Havana's Historian Eusebio Leal.
Leal stressed the demand to free Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, and René González, the Cuban Five, as they are known internationally, during a meeting with prominent Peruvian intellectuals, many of whom are members of the Bloc of Intellectuals in Solidarity with the Cuban Five.
Leal thanked those present for attentions received during his visit, and highlighted the historic ties between his country and Peru, evoking Leoncio Prado, the Peruvian and Cuban national hero who fought for Cuban independence and died in the resistance against the Chilean invasion of his country in the 19th century.
He recalled that the attitude of Leoncio and his brothers were the first to recognize Cuban independence.
The historian recalled Cuba's solidarity with those affected by the 1970 earthquake here, to whom, led by Fidel Castro, the Cubans massively donated blood.
Cuba's ambassador in Peru, Juana Martinez, stressed her agreement and expressed appreciation for the participation of Peruvian intellectuals in solidarity activities with Cuba.
Among participants were poets Hildebrando Perez and Arturo Corcuera, both winners of the Casa de las Americas Prize, and Marco Martos, president of the Peruvian Academy of Language.
Also on the list were former Culture Minister Vicente Otta; artists Bruno Portuguez, Fanny Palacios, Jesus Ruiz-Durand, Victor Escalante and Juan Acevedo, and filmmakers Francisco Adrianzen and Chiara Varesse.
Also included were Isaac Humala and Olga Tasso, parents of President Ollanta Humala, and journalist and president of the Peruvian Committee of Solidarity with the Cuban Five, Gustavo Espinoza, among others.
