Diego Armando Maradona, the greatest Argentine soccer player of all times, asked US President Barack Obama to free five Cuban anti-terrorists held in US prisons since 1998, official sources reported Monday.
The US president has an opportunity to change the history of US-Cuba relations, said Maradona, also former coach of the soccer national team, in a letter sent to Obama.
Latin America is watching Obama, and trusts he will understand the magnitude of these facts, while referring to the need of ending injustices suffered by Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, and René González, Maradona added.
According to the Cuban Embassy in the country, Maradona, thus, joined the international clamor to oppose a 13-year, cruel and unjust imprisonment of the also known Cuban Five, whose right to a fair trial was denied and who were sentenced without evidences by acts they did not commit.
The Cuban Five are serving harsh sentences because they informed the Cuban authorities about violent actions, organized by terrorist groups settled in the US, against Cuba.
