Cuba and Mexico Among 14 New Members of UNHRC
Cuba and Mexico were backed by the UN General Assembly today to join 12 other countries and occupy the two Latin American and Caribbean seats available on the Human Rights Council.

Cuba and Mexico were backed by the UN General Assembly today to join 12 other countries and occupy the two Latin American and Caribbean seats available on the Human Rights Council.
The General Assembly "the plenary of the UN's 193 member countries"elected by direct and secret vote and absolute majority the new representatives of the Council.
In 2006, the Council replaced the Human Rights Commission, a forum criticized for its double standard and selective attacks against developing countries.
Along with Cuba and Mexico, other countries that obtained seats on the body that is in charge of promoting human rights around the world were Algeria, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa (from the African continent), and Saudi Arabia, China, the Maldive Islands and Vietnam (from Asia/Pacific).
The list also includes Macedonia and Russia (Eastern Europe), and France and Britain (Western Europe and other states).
Angola, Qatar, Ecuador, Spain, Guatemala, Libya, Malaysia, Mauritania, Moldova, Poland, Switzerland, Thailand, Uganda and the Maldive Islands conclude their three-year term this year, with the Maldive Islands re-elected, which is permitted for two consecutive periods.
The regional composition of the 47-member Council is: Africa (13 seats), Asia-Pacific (13), Latin America and the Caribbean (eight), West Europe and other states (seven) and Eastern Europe (six).
