Cuba to Inaugurate First Stage of Special Development Zone

January 2014 will see the inauguration of the first stage of the container terminal in the Mariel Special Development Zone, west of Havana. The announcement was made by President Raul Castro as he closed the second session of the Cuban Parliament’s Eight Legislature on Saturday. 

Raul Castro described the new project as attractive for foreign investors and a good laboratory to consider the application of new technologies and entrepreneurial management methods. The special development zone is part of the policies and programs adopted by the Cuban Communist Party as part of the update of the country’s economic model.
