Cubans will mark today, Dec 22, the 50th Anniversary of the proclamation of Cuba as territory free of illiteracy, after the epic literacy campaign starred by the Cuban people in the early days of the Revolution.

A cultural and political ceremony will be held in Havana’s Liberty City (a Batista-era military complex later turned into a school by the socialist government) to celebrate the significant date.

The date is also known in Cuba as the Teacher’s Day, widely celebrated by Cubans in education centers of all levels. Is customary by students to throw a party in honor of their teacher and present him or her with gifts and congratulations.
