The 5th Meeting of the Political Consultation Mechanism between Cuba and El Salvador is being held in San Salvador, led by the island Deputy Foreign Minister, Rogelio Sierra and his peer and host, Carlos Castaneda.
Castaneda, Salvadoran Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Integration and Economic Development, will sign, along with Sierra, a document detailing the agreements reached in the meeting.
The two sides will discuss social, cultural, cooperation, education and health issues.
The consultation meetings are taking place after the restoration of the diplomatic relations between the two countries on June 1st, 2009 (after an interruption of 48 years).
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in March 2010 to create a consultation mechanism between the two foreign ministries.
Cuba's ambassador to El Salvador, Iliana Fonseca, recently described the relations between the two countries as 'very good', following the 7th anniversary of the restoration of the diplomatic ties.
Fonseca said that before June 1st, 2009, when the government of Mauricio Funes and the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front announced the restoration of ties, Cuba had supported the Salvadoran people in times of epidemics and natural disasters.
A small number of doctors have been working in the country as of that date.
They have developed different project in coordination with the Pan-American Health Organization, the Ministry of Health and other organizations.
Cuba supports also national literacy, post-literacy, early childhood education and have put in place a process of advice in the country.
The La Colmenita El Salvador project, which has spread throughout the county through 'houses of culture', is a space for children to share values through art.
El Salvador and Cuba signed a Partial Scope Agreement in 2011 that took effect as of August 1st, 2011.
The aim was to further promote development of bilateral relations and to contribute to the the economy of both countries.
The Central American nation has since condemned the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on the Cuban people.
