The third International Meeting of Rural Women will begin this Saturday in an agricultural cooperative near this provincial capital at the south-centre of the island.

The event, sponsored by the NGO Oxfam Canada, is attended by women leaders on farming communities in Colombia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru and the host country.

Oxfam Canada is a non-profit organization dedicated to development programs in nutrition, health and promotion of citizens' values, with emphasis on the female.

The slogan is "End of global poverty begins with Women's rights".

The official of the Cuban Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) in this province, Jazmin Jimenez, told the press that the invitation to the event was welcomed by many women organizations of the sub-continent.

The two first meetings of this type were held in Nicaragua and Guatemala, recalled Jimenez.

She highlighted the leading role of Cuban women in the rural area and especially in the work of ANAP, in which women represent over 90 percent of the leading posts.

Among the issues for debate by participants are: participation techniques, related problems, conferences, workshops on alternatives for the incorporation of women to the job market and the need to assume more leading roles in the current Latin American societies, leadership and gender.
