The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) presented on Wednesday strategies focusing on the health sector in order to confront the crisis affecting the world, during a WHO meeting in Geneva.
Cuban Health Minister Jose Ramon Balaguer summoned NAM members and observers, as well as Dr. Margaret Chan, director general of the WHO, to a special meeting during the 62nd Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, reported Prensa Latina.
The event, which included numerous expressions of praise for the boost the island has given the Movement during its three years of presidency, emphasized the importance of confronting the challenge of guaranteeing the right to universal access to high-quality healthcare services.
The Cuban official said, “In the midst of this profound crisis, if we do not act with determination, unity, solidarity and urgency, once again it will be the developing countries who suffer the worst consequences for a
longer period of time.”
Profound structural reforms are required. It is not possible to allow the rich nations to reduce the scarce resources currently destined to Official Development Assistance (ODA), he added.
