President Raul Castro met on Sunday with Cuban diplomats and workers who are currently making their contribution in Venezuela as part of an official visit to this South American nation.
“Your mission here is very important,” Raul told the members of the Cuban embassy in Caracas and a representation of thousands of Cuban workers who are making their contribution in the health, education and sports sectors as part of a series of social programs promoted by the administration of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
According to Granma news daily, Raul congratulated them for their responsible and disinterested work and added that their effort reminded him of other Cuban internationalist missions such as that of Angola and other countries.
During the one-hour meeting, the Cuban leader praised the immediate and effective assistance given to Cuba by the Venezuelan Government and people after the passage of hurricanes Gustav, Ike and Paloma, which recently hit Cuba leaving huge economic losses.
For his part, the Cuban ambassador in Caracas, German Sanchez Otero, described Raul’s visit as historic and said that it will strengthen the bonds of friendship between the governments and peoples of Cuba and Venezuela.
Raul announced that, after his visit to Venezuela, he would travel to Brazil to participate in a Latin American and Caribbean Summit on Integration and Development that will take place in Salvador de Bahia on December 16-17.
