Signs of Recovery in Cuban Provinces Hit by Sandy
The eastern provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Holguin, the most affected territories by Hurricane Sandy, show today signs of recovery with gradual clearing roads, resumption of classes, and restore power service.

The eastern provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Holguin, the most affected territories by Hurricane Sandy, show today signs of recovery with gradual clearing roads, resumption of classes, and restore power service.
In Santiago de Cuba, located about 950 kilometers southeast of the capital, reopened its main roads, severely affected by falling trees in the wake of the storm, which hit the island early Thursday, October 25, with maximum winds of 175 kilometers per hour, local radio station CMKC reported.
According to the source, poles, cables, damaged transformers and electric service are being gradually restored to the population.
Also on the list is the partial resumption of classes in Segundo and Tercer Frentes, Mella, Contramaestre and Guama in the eastern municipalities, the worst hit by a category-two hurricane, the National News Agency stated.
Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation announced today to restart operations in Santiago de Cuba, after damages to the main airport of the territory.
Regarding Holguin province, located about 700 kilometers east of Havana, almost all classrooms opened yesterday, while more than 60 percent of consumers already have power service.
In Guantanamo, the easternmost Cuban province, continues recovery actions to restore power.
Cuban President Raul Castro and other leaders and senior officials tour the affected eastern areas, and expressed confidence in the recovery and have called on effort to solve the problems created by Sandy.
Solidarity aid to the provinces hit by Sandy has come from many parts of Cuba.
The hurricane left some 130,000 homes damaged in Santiago de Cuba and other 52,000 in Holguin, plus heavy losses in agriculture.
