The first group of 300 young Pakistani doctors from low-income families will graduate in Cuba in February 2014.
"The Commission on Higher Education and the Government of Pakistan are extremely grateful to Cuba for providing scholarships to Pakistani students," a report from The News International newspaper, which many local media reproduce, said on Saturday.
The future doctors come from all Pakistani regions, including the north-western semiautonomous tribal areas and the Pakistani portion of Kashmir, which lack medical personnel and whose health systems, for that and other reasons, are extremely fragile.
"The graduation of these physicians will help to improve the healthcare sector in Pakistan and at the same time, it will strengthen relations between the two countries," the daily reported.
The Cuban government offered Pakistan scholarships for 1,000 students shortly after the October 2005 earthquake, which killed more than 73,000 people in that nation.
With an excellent public healthcare system, Cuba shows health indicators comparable to those of any developed country in the world, the daily highlighted.
