The United Nations on Thursday acknowledged progress made in the struggle against racial discrimination in Cuba, thanks to state policies aimed at benefiting all sectors of the society.
In statements to Prensa Latina, UN Population Fund assistant representative Rolando Garcia stated that the country achievements are an example for the world, and Cuba now leads Latin America in terms of equal opportunities for its citizens. Those developments are a result of policies promoting citizen and inclusion promoted by the nation leadership, said Garcia, speaking as part of the Cuba and the People of African Descent in America.
In the case of Cuba, it may be said that it has resolved the major problems of discrimination and largely succeeded in including people of African descent in society, Garcia stated at the Juan Marinello Cultural Research Institute in Havana.
UN Children's Fund representative to Cuba Juan Jose Ortiz said none of the thousands of children of African descent affected by poverty and all its secondary effects is Cuban, thanks to the governments political will.
Barbara Pesce, UN resident coordinator in Havana, stated that Cuba is an example of fighting racial discrimination.
