The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) promised on Monday to redouble the actions to aid Haiti on all fields apart from promoting a special work group.

With that aim, UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova introduced, in Paris, Haitian Minister of Culture and Communications Marie Laurence Jocelyn and a delegation of specialists of the Caribbean nation.

Haiti, which was hardly hit by an earthquake on January 12, became the focus of attention of this UN agency that will promote the creation of an International Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property on Tuesday.

"Our duty is to save the tangible and intangible rich treasures of Haiti, restore the education system and make all efforts to find financing for projects which will bring back hope to that country", said Bokova.

She also highlighted the sending of two UNESCO missions to Haiti that will assess the damages the earthquake caused to facilities and to the UN operations there.

"I wrote a letter to Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon so that the United Nations implement measures in favor of the preservation and safeguard of public and private collections, and prevent sacking and smuggling", she commented.

Among the destroyed buildings and monuments in Haiti are fort Jacques, built in 1804; the National Palace, designed by architect George Baussan and opened in 1924; Notre Dame Cathedral from 1912, and the Sacred Heart Church of Turgeau, opened in 1908, among others.
