The secretary general of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the United States, Michael Kinnamon, met on Tuesday with U.S. youths studying at the Latin American Medical School (ELAM in Spanish).

In one of the first activities of his visit to Cuba, Kinnamon talked with School Director Juan Carrizo and with the 119 U.S. students who are majoring in medicine.

We want good relations between Cuba and the United States, and we think that this journey of church senior leaders from our country can contribute to that purpose, said the reverend.

Kinnamon also referred to the case of the Cuban Five unjustly held in U.S. prisons since 1998, and described their sentences as very severe.

On Wednesday, Kinnamon will meet with relatives of the Five, as they are known internationally, and will attend an ecumenical service in Havana.
