Cuba is a completely different example in Latin American with regard to children''s protection, UN Committee on the Rights of the Child Vice president Rosa Maria Ortiz affirmed. Ortiz told Prensa Latina the Cuban health and education services are where they have to be and when they have to be, while in other Latin American nations the State is alien to such important sectors.

That situation results in marginalization of many social groups, thus generating "violence on children and by children," stressed the UN official, who is attending the third International Meeting on Juridical Protection of Children's Rights.

The presence of regional children in gangs is a consequence of the State's role, acting as a repressive body in most cases, instead of elaborating a preventive strategy to solve those problems, said Ortiz.

In the event, to close Friday at the Havana Convention Center, Cuba's Attorney General Juan Escalona explained that the island has a solid juridical system for the protection of children, in compliance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Family Code.

The Cuban children's reality is totally different, because protection of their rights begins since they are conceived, as the health system guarantees specialized assistance to pregnant women, Escalona highlighted.

Meanwhile, he lamented that 120 million children in the world lack education, and over 11 million die before turning five years of preventable diseases, with 150 million suffering malnutrition.
