Cuban blogs are gaining ground, and becoming established as a space for debate, consensus and citizen participation, according to experts gathered for a national meeting on digital media today.
Livia Reyes, Director of the Information Center for the Press, said that the Cuban blogosphere "has come to stay" because it ensures a niche of participation for Internet users, among other reasons.
The 4th Meeting of Digital Media began at Havana's Casa del ALBA with a panel discussion on so-called citizens journalism as an alternative to traditional discourse.
In this regard, Reyes highlighted online magazines like Cubahora that defend interdisciplinary journalism, involving journalists and people from other professions.
Maria del Carmen Ramon, editor of Cubahora, also highlighted the relevance of the online environment for dialogue and for going beyond the mere reporting of information, which prevails in the traditional press.
This meeting is expected to lead to public debate on the projection of Cuban culture on digital media.
It is scheduled to end with the awarding of the 2013 Palma de Plata Prize for the best blogs.
