Cuba Participating in CARIFESTA in Guyana
Under the slogan “A single Caribbean, a single purpose, our culture,
our life!” the Cuban delegation to the 10th CARIFESTA arts festival in
Guyana will be headed by National Literature Prize winner Nancy
Morejón, who has devoted an important part of her work and thinking to
the defense of the region’s cultural values and its study.

Under the slogan “A single Caribbean, a single purpose, our culture, our life!” the Cuban delegation to the 10th CARIFESTA arts festival in Guyana will be headed by National Literature Prize winner Nancy Morejón, who has devoted an important part of her work and thinking to the defense of the region’s cultural values and its study.
At the festival, which runs from July 22 to 31, among the island’s delegation will be Yolanda Wood, director of the Center for Caribbean Studies of the Casa le Las Americas, as well as artists from the island.
The event will include all forms of artistic expressions –from dance and art to literature and culinary traditions– with the diversity that characterizes the peoples of the Caribbean. Among other presentations, Cuba will hold musical shows, film screenings and poetry reading sessions.
A panel on Havana’s Casa de las Américas cultural institution will be held within the framework of the 50th anniversary of its founding. Some of its graphics will also be on display.
After three decades CARIFESTA returns to Guyana, where it originated in 1972, with the purpose of preserving the Caribbean’s material and intangible heritage with the participation of artists from Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Thus, culture emerges as the main ingredient in the construction of healthy societies and the union of governments and peoples, increasingly steeped in a truly Caribbean spirit.
CARIFESTA’s main objective is to create and spread the diverse regional aesthetics in a mixture of reflection and rejoicing, in the way that its name suggests: as a fiesta.
