HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 4 (acn) Mikhail L. Kamynin, Russian Federation ambassador to Cuba, highlighted this Thursday the work of prevention that the Caribbean country does in the case of disasters to protect people's lives.

In an exclusive interview with ACN, the Russian diplomat, who received the first two planes with humanitarian aid that arrived this Thursday morning at Havana's Jose Marti International Airport for those affected by Hurricane Gustav, highlighted the Cuban government's effort to guarantee the safety of its people and material goods.

He compared this situation with other countries like Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and the United States where the hurricane killed over 100 people.

Kamynin said that the help sent by his country, distributed in four planes, was the decision of Russian president, Dmitri Medvedev, "as tangible evidence of the friendship and solidarity that have always existed between both governments and peoples" he assured.

Division General Ramón Pardo Guerra, chief of the Civil Defence General Staff, on behalf of the Cuban president Raul Castro and historical leader Fidel Castro, thanked the European government for the gesture of solidarity after the passing of the hurricane.

The Russian ambassador announced he will soon visit the affected areas and that tomorrow two Russian television crews (RTR government TV and public ORT, who also arrived this Thursday) will depart for Pinar del Rio.
