The positive impact of Cuban medical missions on other nations was highlighted in Havana on Monday, during celebrations to mark the 45th anniversary of Cuba's cooperation in this field with the Third World and the 10th anniversary of the Integral Health Program (IHP).
More than 1,000 delegates, graduates from Havana's Latin American School of Medicine, internationalist health workers, and Cuban journalists, exchanged their experiences, challenges, and perspectives in terms of this humanitarian work.
Cuban Foreign Ministry official Tania Pérez told the press that, from 1960 to August, 2008, more than 270,000 Cubans have offered their technical assistance to more than 160 countries.
She stressed that of all Cuban internationalist missions, those related to medical help have been the largest, by way of which 185,000 health professionals and technicians have offered their services in 103 countries.
Today, more than 4,500 Cuban collaborators in 12 Latin American and Caribbean nations, 22 in Africa, 3 in Asia, and one in Europe (in the Ukraine) are boosting the IHP, which was put into practice by Cuba in Central America in 1998.
Some of the stories of this epic deed were told during the forum's Press Commission, held at Havana's Convention Center.
Participants focused on this professional effort - (not exempt from dangers and challenges), by way of the interventions by journalists Gloria Ugás, from the Cuban television's Information System; Ismary Barcia, from Perla Visión, central Cuenfuegos province; and Belkis Pérez Cruz, from Tele Pinar, eastern Pinar del Río province. offered the humane side of the work of Cuban doctors and nurses in the most isolated places of the planet, this time in Honduras, Haiti, Venezuela and Paraguay.
Homage was paid during the activity to journalist Nelson Barrera and editor Ernesto Barrios, from Cuban television, who died in a car accident in Bolivia.
As part of the IHP, 355 Cuban journalists and technicians have spread reports of the altruistic work of physicians from the island in 22 nations, following the agreements reached at the 7th Congress of the Association of Cuban Journalists and an idea of Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.
