Venezuelan Education Minister Hector Navarro has assured that his country is searching for a change of the educational model aimed at full satisfaction of citizens.
"We want to form people who buy their goods according to their needs, not people who are consumers," Navarro told Prensa Latina.
During a recess of the University 2010 Congress underway at Havana International Convention Center until Friday, the Venezuelan official pointed out that this goal is a rupture with the current order.
The organic law of education passed last year aims at preparing persons to analyze commercial messages before accepting them as such in an effort to counter consumerism as divulged by the mass media, the minister indicated.
We must create ideological, political vaccines to protect children and the youth against the consumer avalanche that directly attacks the environment, Navarro said.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization recognizes that Venezuela is complying with the Millennium Goals, he said referring to the educational advances promoted by President Hugo Chavez.
During four days delegates of 60 countries in Havana analyzed 2,000 conferences grouped in 13 workshops in parallel to the Congress.
As part of the agenda, the more than 2,400 academicians are debating about their experiences in postgraduate studies on Ibero America, universalization and quality of higher education.
Representatives from Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador are among the main promoters of this meeting, the seventh since 1998, according to a report by the organizers.
