Caribbean countries are preparing themselves to protect human lives and prevent material and economic losses as they face the start of what has been predicted as an active hurricane season, with up to 23 tropical storms and seven strong hurricanes, according to estimates.

In the cases of Bahamas and Bermudas, operations include contingency actions aimed at confronting the possible arrival of oil from the Gulf of Mexico to their coasts in the wake of the explosion and sinking of a platform in April 22.

Emergency management organizations are verifying state-run structures established for likely scenarios, including evacuation, building collapses, air disasters, floods and landslides.

They are assessing the availability of power generators, water reserves, food and basics in shelters and government buildings to be used as refuge and carry out campaigns to raise awareness and teach the people how to protect their homes, what to do in case of a hurricane and main items to store.

The Caribbean hurricane activity has registered an upward trend since 1995 when, according to experts, a new active cycle of hurricanes started with 19 tropical storms on record.

Since then, many such meteorological events have left thousands of deaths, millions of victims and heavy damages in the fragile infrastructures and economies of the area, leading governments to establish appropriate early warning systems, prepare the population better and reinforce their disaster response capacity.
