The Cuban Civil Defense authorities issued a tropical cyclone warning at 3 pm Sunday for the central provinces of Ciego de Avila, Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus, Cienfuegos and Matanzas and a tropical cyclone watch for the western provinces of Habana and Ciudad de la La Habana (the Capital).

A hurricane warning is still in progress for the eastern Cuban provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Granma, Holguin, Las Tunas and Camaguey.

Hurricane Ike is expected to hit Cuba tonight through the locality of Punta Lucrecia in Holguin province. The category four storm is moving west and is expected to keep on moving northwest after it lands in Cuba.
Such a forward movement will follow a track parallel to Cuba´s geographical position, either moving on land or along the northern coast, which confirms weather forecasts.

As part of preventive measures, over 108,000 citizens have been evacuated in Holguin province, particularly from coasta zones like Banes, Gibara, Rafael Freyre, Moa, Frank Pais and Mayari.
