Cubans Keep Recovering from Hurricane Damage

The Cuban Domestic Trade Sector was also hard hit by the passage of hurricanes Gustav and Ike. Tuesday’s TV show “The Round Table” focused on the pace of recovery in that and other sector in different Cuban provinces.
Deputy Domestic Trade Minister Francisco Silva Herrera said that the storms inflicted huge damage on facilities particularly located in the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Las Tunas, Holguin, Guantanamo and in the municipality of the Isle of Youth.
Some 167, 000 tons of foods were protected from the effects of the storm; however, some 4, 727 food storages were damaged, as well as 2, 640 grocery stores, plus over 500 gastronomic facilities.
Major efforts have included the repair of grocery stores and the regular distribution of school snacks for 352, 000 high school students and teachers. In Cuba, high schools work during the whole day, while students and teachers are guaranteed their noon snack.
The deputy minister said that recovery actions also focus on other domestic commercial facilities offering different services to the population.
RECOVERY IN GUANTANAMO: FOOD IS A PRIORITY
The president of the Provincial Defense Council in eastern Guantánamo province, Luis Torres Iribar, said that efforts in the territory focus the production of foodstuffs and the recovery of crucial social sectors.
Iribar recalled that over 31,000 citizens were evacuated in Guantanamo before the passage of hurricane Ike, 4,300 lost their homes. However, more than 1,200 homes have been repaired with resources from the state reserve and others which were originally allocated for local social programs. But the housing recovery will still take time, he said.
The electric service has been re-established one hundred percent, while 93 percent of the telephone service has been recovered. The radio and TV service is back on its feet, said the official.
Some 107 schools were fully recovered, while the students of other 16 educations centers, still to be repaired are taking their courses in alternative centers. Many health care centers continue under recovery.
In the agriculture sector some 3,460 hectares have been recovered, said the official, who recalled that lots of coffee beans were lost. A massive campaign that includes people from all walks of life are currently participating in coffee bean collection. Other sectors under recovery include cocoa, plantain and rice, a staple recently introduced in Guantanamo.
LAS TUNAS PROVINCE: LOWEST INFANT MORTALITY RATE IN CUBA
The president of the Provincial Defense Council and First Communist Party Secretary in eastern Las Tunas province, Jorge Cuevas Ramos announced that the province lowered its infant mortality rate down to only 3,05 per every live birth, the lowest indicator in all Cuban provinces.
Cuevas Ramos said that 23 days after of the passage of Ike 80 percent of the electric service has been recovered. He said the production and processing of food for the population is a priority, with 2, 599 hectares of land planted with short-term crops, which include root vegetables, corn and others.
Cuevas Ramos also said that local government offices have received 2,534 requests for lands by individuals and legal entities, while local agricultural organizations are considering the crops that may yield produce for the population over the next six months.
Recovery actions also focus on health and education centers, as well as the communication sector, said the executive. The mobilization of people from all walks of life, particularly youths from the Communist League has provided a significant boost to recovery actions in the agriculture sector in Las Tunas province.
The TV show concluded by announcing the upcoming running of a video of the recent concert, held in New York, in favor of the five antiterrorist fighters held in US jails, which was organized by the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban Five.
